Internet Downtime
I think I spend too much time being plugged in. In my house you can’t get more than 5 feet away from a computer. The thing that gets me the most is my iPhone. Google Reader (on the iphone and the web) aggregates content from a whole host of blogs and news sites. I always have 1000+ unread items and it’s impossible to keep up. Not to mention that are a ton of apps that are so much fun to play with. This is really eating into my family life. If I don’t make some serious changes here, I’m going to miss what’s really important. So as a first step I’m turning off my iPhone off from 5pm-7pm. That means no email or phone calls from work, no internet browsing, and no games. And you know, after almost a week of this I feel pretty good. The kids notice a difference, which really brings the point home that I probably have a problem. I think in the next few months I’m going to try and set some additional limitations on myself and ultimately others to insure I have the time to focus on what’s important.
