Thoughts on iPad
Well it only took a week. Without any prompting on my part, my family is pretty much hooked on the iPad. It’s now the “go-to” device for getting on the web, playing games, online video, etc.
Kayla (12) loves using Pages and Numbers. She has this elaborate spreadsheet she uses to manage an imaginary soccer team. Stephen (10) and I are playing Plants vs Zombies and Geodefense. Adele (4) uses it to draw and watch video. Michele and I are enjoying Safari and iBooks.
So it’s getting used by the whole family. So much so that I really wish the iPad supported mutiple logins. Would be nice to not have to log Michele out of Facebook. Like the desktop computer, the iPad is more of a shared device. It would be nice if Apple made it a bit easier to do this.
So far it looks like the iPad replaces most of the laptops and netbooks around the house. For me, a lot of video podcasts I used to watch on my iPhone I now wait to watch, viewing the HD version on my iPad (when it’s my turn). In fact, I intend to sell my Asus eeepc and 12” Powerbook. And I have no plans to purchase another notebook. I think the Sizemore house of the future has an iMac that acts as central hub/server for all of our data with 2 or 3 iPads that connect to it. The only notebook in the house would be my work computer (which is currently a 2006 macbook pro).
We are taking a vacation to Washington DC later this month, and I’m pretty sure we’ll get by with the iPad and the camera connector. Can’t wait to use google maps on the big screen while on the road. Integrated GPS is one of the reasons I waited for the iPad 3g. Can’t wait!
